北のヤブツバキの花は大きいの？

最近、ツバキの問い合わせが増えたので…

以前から言われていることですが、ホウザンツバキと呼ばれていた沖縄のヤブツバキは花が小さいのが特徴なのですが、同じく中国沿岸の暖かい地域のヤブツバキの花も小さいです（写真）。九州も北日本に比べれば小さめ。同じヤブツバキでも地域間の形質に違いはあります。

冬咲きのヤブツバキは、暖かい地域では、メジロもくればミツバチ（３月くらいは）も来ます。北の方はそうではありません。鳥媒に特化せざるを得ない北のヤブツバキは、メジロにつかまってもらえるよう、大きな花弁になるのかもしれないですね。

In warm regions, winter-blooming Camellia japonica attracts both Japanese white-eyes (Zosterops japonicus) and honeybees. However, in northern areas, this is not the case. Since C. japonica in colder regions must rely solely on bird pollination, they may have evolved larger petals to provide a stable perch for Japanese white-eyes.
